Language Learning

Complete Authentic Experiences

Language learning is much more than simply acquiring words and the ability to speak and read. Our programs are taught by language training experts who all have years of experience and are equipped with our language teaching methodology: the Growing Participator Approach. In addition, they offer students an opportunity to acquire essential intercultural skills. We provide knowledge, attitudinal, and skill-based training for intercultural workers to operate effectively and sensitively in the Ethiopian context. Because of this, our graduates can operate effectively and confidently in daily life with a better understanding of their Ethiopian friends and colleagues.

Our Approach: Growing Participator Approach (GPA)

We utilize the highly effective Growing Participator Approach (GPA), a six-phase program developed by Dr. Greg Thomson. This method emphasizes the socio-cultural nature of language learning, helping learners build genuine relationships with people from the host community, known as “Nurturers.” As a Growing Participator (GP), you’ll learn to integrate deeply into the community and its culture.

At the SIL-LC, you can complete the first four phases of this program. The final two phases are designed for self-study, applying the techniques mastered during your training with us.

Learning Phases

Our structured program guides you through progressive levels of language and cultural proficiency:

  • Phase 1: Here-and-Now: Focuses on foundational listening and non-verbal responses, building a basic vocabulary and understanding simple grammar through everyday interactions. We offer adapted options for those interested in basic and survival language skills for shorter stays.
  • Phase 2: Story Building: You’ll begin to speak more freely, engaging in storytelling activities with your Nurturer.
  • Phase 3: Shared Stories: Develops conversational ability by listening to and discussing familiar daily activities, stories, and shared experiences.
  • Phase 4: Deep Life Sharing: Relationships deepen as you discuss everyday life, culture, and personal histories through ethnographic questions, enhancing advanced reading and writing.

For those with prior language knowledge or seeking a refresher, we offer assessments to place you into the appropriate phase based on your current proficiency.
